Every time you connect to the Internet your computer is assigned an IP address by your Internet Service Provider. Thus your IP address can be used to trace your communications back to your ISP, your work's network, your school, or a public access network. Even though your IP address may not identify you personally, an IP address is a unique identifier of your PC while while you are online.
It is possible to hide your real IP address on the Web by using an anonymous proxy server. A proxy acts as an intermediary, routing network packets between your computer and the Internet. When using a proxy for anonymous web surfing, an IP address of that proxy is relayed instead of your own helping you stay anonymous. And remember: "Privacy is not a crime and anonymity is not morally ambiguous or wrong, they are your right."
